Undergraduate Minor in Adapted Physical Education
The primary audience for this undergraduate certificate in Adapted Physical Education (APE), accelerated pathway includes already certified health and physical education (HPE) teachers who are endorsed in HPE and wish to add the APE endorsement. This 12-credit (four-course) undergraduate certificate in APE leads to qualifications deemed by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to be certified to teach APE.
What you'll learn
In this program, you will learn how to deliver high-quality, evidence-based instruction to children with disabilities in the PK–12 education system. The curriculum includes instructional design, adapted aquatics, IEP participation, assessment, leadership, disability sports, and coaching.
Course Requirements
This certificate includes four APE-specific courses, each incorporating 50 hours of embedded clinical experiences, totaling 200 hours. Cohorts will complete the program within one year and, upon completion, will be eligible to take the APENS (Adapted Physical Education National Standards) exam. After successfully passing the exam and completing the required clinical hours, participants can apply to the MDE to add the APE endorsement to their teaching certificates.

Admission requirements
The accelerated pathway in Adapted Physical Education is open only to teachers who have already taken and passed the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Health and Physical Education. Eligible participants must be certified and endorsed to teach Health and PE in the state of Michigan.
