Biography

Dr. Bo Shen holds a tenured full professorship in the Division of Kinesiology, Health, and Sport Studies at Wayne State University. As a research fellow of the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE America), he currently serves as the editor-in-chief in the International Journal of Physical Activity and Health and on the editorial board of the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education. Dr. Shen has chaired the Special Interest Group (SIG) for research on learning and instruction in physical education at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and served as the president of the International Chinese Society of Physical Activities and Health (ICSPAH). His research centers on students' motivation, curriculum and instruction in physical education, physical activity intervention, and adapted physical education. Dr. Shen has presented at over 130 national and international conferences and has authored more than 90 data-based research articles published in leading education journals, including those focused on physical education. His research has received funding from prestigious entities such as the US Department of Education and the US Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI). Dr. Shen holds the distinction of being the inaugural recipient of the Helen M. Heitmann Young Scholar Award from the Curriculum and Instruction Academy of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). Additionally, he has twice been honored with the Exemplary Paper Award at the SIG of research on learning and instruction in physical education at AERA. Dr. Shen has received the research writing award from the research consortium of SHAPE America and the distinguished research award at the Division E-Human Development at AERA.

The role of content specificity in situational interest and physical activity

Purpose: To identify the role of content specificity in moderating situational interest and its relationship with physical activity (PA), we examined the between- and within-content relations of situational interest and PA in an urban elementary physical education context using fitness and basketball as comparative contents. Method: Fourth and fifth graders (N = 125) completed questionnaires and wore pedometers to assess situational interest and PA across a fitness unit and a basketball unit, respectively. Results: Based on our confirmatory factor analyses and fit indexes, situational interest, and PA demonstrated strong content specificity. Strengths of associations between the two units differed by situational interest dimensions and PA (r ≤ .50). Within-content interrelations of these dimensions and PA were not consistent (X2 Decrease ≥ 3.40, p < .05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that content specificity in physical education plays a significant role in moderating students’ motivation and its function on PA.
