Biography

 Dr. Julie Moreno’s professional journey has focused on the acquisition of knowledge and insight via education, practice, and research in the fields of arts and science to strive to positively impact others as a counselor, art therapist and educator.  She is currently employed as an Assistant Teaching Faculty member in the Counseling and Art Therapy Graduate Programs in the College of Education at Wayne State University. Prior to accepting the faculty position, she was employed as a senior counselor and art therapist at University of Michigan’s outpatient centers for Pediatric Neuro-rehabilitation within the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) department of C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI.  In this position, Julie utilized counseling and art therapy as part of a rehabilitative therapy team of OTs, PTs, TRs, rehab psychologists, and speech pathologists to assist children, young adults and their families in the acquisition of strategies during rehabilitation.  In this position, Julie also facilitated group sessions through PMR for teens with complex pain and their parents, as well as with U of M’s STEPS program for children with autism. Julie has also previously been employed and interned as a counselor and art therapist at various agencies, public schools, and non-profit organizations working with adults with severe mental illness; traumatic brain injury; teens and adults with developmental disabilities; children with visual impairments, emotional and cognitive impairments, autism, and severe multiple impairments; and with older adults with Alzheimer’s disease.  Julie received her PhD from Wayne State University’s College of Education counseling program with a concentration in rehabilitation counseling.  She enjoys and is grateful to have the opportunity to instruct and supervise graduate students as well as providing therapy to individuals with mental health challenges.

 

 

Area of Expertise

Teaching, research and mental health counseling and art therapy with various age groups and populations.

Research Interests

Multidisciplinary treatment protocols including mental health counseling and art therapy for acquired injuries and congenital conditions involving Individuals with autism, traumatic brain injury and complex pain issues.
