Detroit exhibit ‘Into the Open’ brings striking works from seven area women
By Stephanie Sokol
Anita Bates, assistant professor of teaching and coordinator of visual arts education in the College of Education, curated the Detroit Artists Market’s latest exhibit “Into the Open.” The exhibit, which is open through February 19, features the works of seven women from metro Detroit. “To me, art is a way to really reveal yourself to the world in a non-verbal manner,” said Bates. “It employs the elements and principles of art and design as language, whether it be lines made by distinct brush strokes, various color harmonies, or the way an artist addresses space. Also, art invites critical examination and thought, opening up new avenues of dialogue.”
