Covid risk at sporting events
As the warmer weather rolls around, outdoor sports are rolling out, for both kids and adults. Dr. Tamara Hew-Butler, a podiatric physician and associate professor of exercise and sports science at Wayne State University, talks about Covid risks for spectators. “Covid is spread by droplets and aerosols, and the virus hangs on to that,” she said. “The louder that you’re cheering, the more virus you can actually spread.” Dr. Hew-Butler said to consider wearing a mask outdoors if you live or work with young children, people who are immunocompromised, or the elderly because the risk of Covid is greater when you go home or socialize after the sporting event. “Most of the spread of Covid is not during the actual competitions. It’s actually when they go home or when they socialize.” She reminds everyone that exercise is medicine for your mind and body, and good health is key in fighting a severe case of Covid-19.
