TED 2250 Becoming a Professional Educator
(3 cr. hrs.)
This course includes an examination of issues surrounding social justice in urban schools and society through the exploration of the historical, political and social trends that influence education. The course also includes a 40-hour service learning clinical experience.
Prerequisite: Admission to the College of Education initial teacher certification program.
TED 5150 Analysis of Elementary School Teaching
(*5 cr. hrs.)
This course addresses organization and management of classrooms, lesson planning, teaching strategies, and assessment. This course includes 300 hours of clinical experiences prior to full-time student teaching.
TED 5150 Prerequisites - Elementary
- Pass all professional sequence courses
- COE Level 2 status
- Pass ELE 6310: Reading. Instruction
- Pass all methods courses with a C or higher
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.5+ or Graduate GPA of 3.0+
- Satisfactory academic progress with no unresolved Incomplete (I) grades
TED 5650 Pre-Student Teaching Clinical Experience for Secondary Majors
(*5 cr. hrs.)
This course provides both a regular seminar and 300 hours of clinical experiences in secondary school settings prior to full-time student teaching.
TED 5650 Prerequisites - Secondary
- Pass all professional sequence courses
- COE Level 2 status
- Pass all methods courses in major/minor with a C or higher
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.5+ or Graduate GPA of 3.0+
- Satisfactory academic progress with no unresolved Incomplete (I) grades
TED 5780 Directed Teaching and Conference
(*6-9 cr. hrs.)
Offered for S and U grades only.
Directed teaching in schools for students preparing elementary or secondary certification. Includes both a regular seminar and 400 hours of clinical experiences.
Student Teaching Prerequisites - Elementary
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.5+ or Graduate GPA of 3.0+
- Pass all professional sequence courses
- Successful completion of TED 5150
- Completion of 90% course work and all methods courses
- Satisfactory academic progress with no unresolved Incomplete (I) grades
Student Teaching Prerequisites - Secondary
- Undergraduate GPA of 2.5+ or Graduate GPA of 3.0+
- Pass all professional sequence courses
- Successful completion of TED 5650
- Completion of 90% course work and all methods courses
- Satisfactory academic progress with no unresolved Incomplete (I) grades
TED 5790 Directed Teaching and Conference for Special Groups
(*5-9 cr. hrs.)
Offered for S and U grades only.
Discussion of educational issues and directed teaching in schools for students seeking certification in special areas (e.g., Early Childhood Education, Art Education, Special Education). Students interested in completing General Elementary and Special Education field experiences in the same semester should see their advisor to discuss eligibility.
Additional Student Teaching Prerequisites for Specific Program Areas
- Music Education majors must pass MTTC prior to Student Teaching
- Starting Fall 2018, students in the Special Education program will be eligible for student teaching in Special Education (TED 5790) when they fulfill the following criteria:
- Maintain an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or graduate (MAT) GPA of 3.0.
- Complete all Elementary and Special Education Coursework with passing grades. SED 5130 (3 credits) is the one exception to this requirement and can be taken during student teaching without requesting a policy waiver. Special Education teaching candidates who wish to enroll full-time (12 credits) during student teaching may enroll in 9 credits of student teaching and 3 credits of SED 5130. No other enrollment option is permitted without a waiver by the Inclusive and Special Education faculty. Waivers will be granted by the program faculty on a case-by-case basis.
