Graduate Assistant

Wayne State University is searching for a Graduate Student Assistant, College of Education, at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions

  • Assist advising team in outreach and intervention to identified students' groups (such as students on probation, stop out students, etc.), to develop academic recovery plans, and enhance student skills that will benefit their academic, professional and/or personal success.
  • Assist with university orientation and divisional outreach efforts, as needed, to help attract, register, enroll and retain various student populations.
  • Collaborate with campus resources to support students, provide one-on-one and group coaching related to academic success, and coordinate study groups, including support for the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification.
  • Assist in the implementation of divisional student success strategies, including but not limited to community building activities, workshops, cohort initiatives, mentoring, leadership, conferences etc.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, development and supervision of work-study students, student employees, and/or volunteers.
  • Assist in provide advising support to students, as needed.
  • Assist with data analysis and auditing when needed.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekend hours as requested.
  • Must have own transportation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications

  • Must have earned a bachelor’s degree and is admitted and enrolled in a Wayne State University graduate degree program.
  • Meet Good Standing requirements as a Graduate Student.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team setting; ability to work with faculty, administration, staff, parents, and students; sensitivity to the needs of a pluralistic and non-traditional student population; interpersonal/human relations skills; ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions; ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the university; ability to identify students' needs for support services to make appropriate recommendations; and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organization, technological, and collaborative skills.
  • Strong focus on detail and task completion.
  • Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as needed and requested.

Preferred qualifications

Preferred qualifications are students in a doctoral program with experience in higher education as an undergraduate or graduate student.

Compensation type: Tuition, Stipend: $25,952.00 (12 month)

Benefits

Graduate Student Assistants have the option of accepting subsidized medical, dental and vision insurance. A Tuition scholarship provides payment for up to 10 graduate credits for each of the fall and winter semesters and up to two graduate credits for the spring/summer semester appointment. The scholarships will pay for only graduate credits listed on a student's Plan of Work.

Certificate of Relevancy required

The Supervisor and the Graduate Student Assistant will agree that the position duties do not include work whose product is reasonably expected to be used among other purposes for the student’s dissertation, thesis, essay, or independent or directed study, or other work for the primary benefit of the student’s research, scholarly or education program. In addition, both will agree that the work is professionally appropriate for a graduate student in this field.
