‘Daughter of Detroit’ continues to teach and help any way she can
By Scott Talley

A driven teacher returns to “the old neighborhood” to work magic with kids that have been written off by society. The scene conjures visions of TV sitcoms and dramas created by the networks on more than a couple of occasions throughout the years. But when Earlene Hall tells the story, there is nothing fictional about it, because she was that teacher, on a mission more than 30 years ago at Joy Middle School in Detroit. The decision Hall made as a child to become an educator still guides her actions today. Her professional journey has included being the head teacher at Parkside Day Care Center; receiving an “Outstanding Teacher” award as a Detroit adult education instructor; being named “Teacher of the Year” by the Booker T. Washington Business Association; helping a student become a Grand Award winner at the Detroit Area Mathematics and Science Fair; serving as Detroit Public Schools’ supervisor of Middle School Mathematics; authoring math textbooks and more. She wants it known that she will never stop being a Detroit educator. Hall earned a doctoral degree in education from Wayne State University in 2003.
