Undergraduate Minor in English as a Second Language teaching endorsement
The minor in English as a Second Language (ESL) meets the requirements for the Michigan Department of Education endorsement on an existing Michigan certificate for P-12. As a teacher with a ESL endorsement, you will be prepared to provide instruction to students in the language of English as second language education for the subjects and grade levels indicated on your teaching certificate.
What you’ll learn
Designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach and support students in bilingual and multicultural settings. You’ll learn to create inclusive, culturally responsive, and effective learning environments. Teachers with an English as a second language education endorsement can also teach literacy in students’ home language, English as a second language (ESL) courses at the level of certification, and sheltered instruction in all subjects indicated on teaching certificate. The Michigan Department of Education provides information on courses that can be taught with the Bilingual Endorsement.
Course requirements
The endorsement requires 24 credits to complete all components. Coursework must be completed in accordance with the academic procedures of the College of Education and the University for undergraduate scholarships and degrees. Courses must be completed with grades of ‘C’ or better and an overall 2.5 grade point average to meet College graduation requirements.

Admission requirements
Students interested must have or be currently pursuing an existing Michigan teaching certificate. Successfully complete the language proficiency examination in English and the designated language of your individual program prior to taking courses for this minor. A passing score of at least Advanced Low on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages' Oral Proficiency Interview in a language approved by the Michigan Department of Education.
