Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) - Master of Science (M.S.)(Online)

This is an interactive, discussion-based, online, program that trains practitioners extensively in Applied Behavior Analysis, with a focus on treating autism. Students obtain their degree in five consecutive semesters beginning in the fall each year as a cohort model.  Field placement assistance is provided, and field work is integrated throughout the coursework. Students will be prepared to complete the required supervised field work and sit for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination. The art therapy program (M.Ed.) prepares students as competent entry-level art therapists, in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains, who, after completing post-education supervised clinical experience, will be eligible to apply for the credential to practice art therapy, the Art Therapist, Registered (ATR).

The Visual Art Education program views art education as an iterative process, where educators are constantly improving upon their practice to meet current pedagogies. Counseling - Master of Arts (M.A.)

Our Council for the Accreditation of Counseling (CACREP) accredited Counseling M.A. program is among the oldest and most prestigious counseling programs in the country. Our cutting-edge training approach offers hybrid and in-person courses that support students in simultaneously building foundational knowledge and clinical skills.

The CAAHEP - accredited Art Therapy program, integrated within Clinical Mental Health Counseling as a "concentration" in art therapy, prepares students as competent entry-level art therapists, in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Students’ CMHC +AC programs culminate in applied clinical experience in our state-of-the-art, on-site training clinic and in off-campus internships. The counseling faculty believes that our students are the foundation of our program, and thus, we strive to offer top quality, hands-on training to prepare the most competent and ethical professional counselors and art therapists.

Early & Elementary Education - Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.)

WSU College of Education’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed for students who have completed a bachelor’s in a non-education program with appropriate teaching majors and minors, and who desire both a master’s and Michigan Standard Teaching Certification at the elementary level. Students may also earn certification at the Post-Bachelor level.

We are excited to share our new elementary Post-Bachelor (PB)/Master of Arts (MAT) teacher certification program (link to video). Our Early & Elementary Education program will offer two certification bands: Pk-3 and/or 3-6 as well as the option to add endorsements.

Exercise & Sport Science - Master of Science (M.S.)

The exercise and sport science degree provides a science-based curriculum for improving human performance and appropriate for a variety of graduate professional programs such as nursing, occupational therapy, physician assistant, physical therapy, athletic training or medical school. Students develop application skills for sport and fitness activities, assessment and evaluation of various populations and fitness levels, and human movement systems from subdisciplines of kinesiology.  

Admission to the M.S. program is contingent upon admission to the Graduate School. In addition, applicants must provide official transcripts showing they meet the following criteria:

  • Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher for regular admission
  • Undergraduate GPA of 2.8 to 2.99 for qualified admission
  • No GRE required

Health and Physical Education Teaching - Masters of Science (M.S)

Master of Science with a major in Health and Physical Education Teaching

The program emphasis is on obtaining teaching knowledge and skills in Health and Physical Education Teaching. The curriculum includes classes in; curriculum development for school health and physical education programs, implementing developmentally appropriate instruction for all learners, assessing health and physical education content knowledge and skill proficiency, using instructional technology effectively, and demonstrating the qualities of a professional Health and Physical Educator. Each concentration is comprised of tailored coursework and professional experiences according the student's prior background and professional aspirations to prepare them to meeting multiple levels of disciplinary standards including:

  • The Michigan Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (MI InTASC) Model Core Teaching Standards, adopted by the State Board of Education (SBE) in 2013, define the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills, and dispositions that all entry-level teachers should possess upon completion of an approved teacher preparation program.
  • Michigan-specific content standards define the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the specific discipline(s) in which teacher candidates seek endorsements, as well as pedagogical applications of that disciplinary knowledge. The Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) is designed for students who have completed a bachelor's degree in a non-education program with appropriate teaching majors and minors, and who desire both a master's degree and Michigan Standard Teaching Certification at either the secondary level. Teaching certification can be earned prior to completing the master's degree requirements. Each of the M.A.T. programs consist of graduate-level courses (several involving work with children in a school setting) and field experiences (pre-student teaching for one semester and student teaching for one semester).
