High Five Literacy

Looking for Help in Reading and Writing for your Children?

The High Five Literacy Program at Wayne State University is open to students in first through sixth grade. The program will provide free tutoring in reading and writing skills one day a week from January through the third week of April for the Winter 2025 semester. The program will be available one day a week during the Winter 2025 semester. Tutors are preservice teachers completing their coursework in the teacher certification program under the supervision of faculty in the Reading, Language, and Literature program.

HIGH FIVE LITERACY PROGRAM APPLICATION FORM (1st - 6th grade)

Winter 2025

The High Five Literacy Program for 2025 will be in person one day a week. Program will begin Wednesday, January 22, 2025 and end on Wednesday, April 23, 2025 from 5:45 .pm. - 6:45 p.m. at that time there will be teachers there to work with your children.

Please fill out the application if the day and times work for your child.

Parent/Guardian please complete the application in order for it to be accepted. If application is incomplete it will not be accepted.

Parent/Guardian Information

I am able to bring my child(ren) to the Wayne State College of Education (5425 Gullen Mall) for tutoring sessions each week *
I understand that tutoring is from 5:45-6:45 on Wednesday evenings on the following dates and confirm that my child can attend, unless ill: January: 22 (please plan to attend orientation this evening), 29 February: 5, 12, 26 (no tutoring 2/19) March: 3, 19 (no tutoring 3/5 and 2/26) April: 2, 9, 16, 23. *
Due limited space in this program, it is important that tutoring spots go to children who are able to attend regularly and get the most benefit from the program. Two (2) or more absences will result in your child being withdrawn from the program so that we are able to offer the spot to another student on the wait list. I give permission for the child/children listed above to participate in the Literacy Program in the College of Education at Wayne State University. I understand that tutors in this program are students who engage in this instruction as part of the requirements for their coursework for Elementary Education. I give permission for the above named student(s) to be video recorded and audio recorded during instruction and for work to be photocopied. I understand that these recordings and students work will not be used in any form for profit nor will they be shared with others not related to this program without my permission.

You will be notified if your child is accepted into the program by the second week of January 2025.
Note: Due to overwhelming responses, we will be unable to contact each parent. If we do not call you, your child will be place on our current waiting list! Applicants must reapply each school year.

The High Five Literacy Program for Winter 2025 will be held in the College of Education, room 30. Teachers will work with the children on Wednesday evenings from 5:45-6:45 p.m.

The program can accommodate a limited number of students, therefore, students; will be selected on a first come, first serve basis. Students who are not selected will be placed on a waiting list until the next opening is available for each academic year. Applicants must reapply each school year.
