Darian Owens-White, Brailen Neely and Kate Sherwood have been named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for men’s and women’s basketball

For the men and women basketball, Sport Management majors Darian Owens-White and Brailen Neely were voted to the All-GLIAC First Team; and Kate Sherwood, Kinesiology major was selected to the All-GLIAC Second Team.

Owens-White was the team's leading scorer at 18.1 points per game, while starting all 17 regular-season games and playing nearly 37 minutes per contest.  He averaged 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.  Owens-White was the best free throw shooter in the GLIAC at 94.9 percent (74-of-78) and set a program record by making 60 consecutive free throws.  He scored in double-digits on 14 occasions, including six 20-point games.  He poured in a career-best 32 points against Davenport on Jan. 15th.  Owens-White posted a double-double of 27 points and 11 rebounds versus Purdue Northwest on Feb. 6th.  He ranked second in the GLIAC in minutes per game (36:50), fourth in scoring (18.1 PPG) and sixth in steals (25).  He was twice named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week (Jan 19th and Feb. 8th).  A Second Team All-GLIAC selection for the 2018-19 season, Owens-White missed all of the 2019-20 campaign due to a pre-season injury.

Neely was a key part of WSU's offensive attack averaging 16.2 points per game and dishing out 5.4 helpers per night.  He started all 17 regular-season games and played over 37 minutes per contest.  Neely scored at least 10 points in 15 games, including five

20-point games.  He tallied a season-best 25 points in a victory at Parkside on Feb. 13th.  Neely notched a double-double of 18 points and a season-high 12 assists in the clutch win over Ferris State to end the regular season on Feb. 27th.  He led the GLIAC in minutes per game (37:40), ranked second in both assists per game (5.4) and steals per game (2.3), was sixth in free throw percentage (.850), and ninth in both points per game (16.2) and field goal percentage (.514).  Neely was named to the Preseason All-GLIAC Team and was selected GLIAC South Division Player of the Week on Feb. 22nd.  This is the second consecutive season Neely has earned First Team All-GLIAC recognition.

Sherwood was voted to the All-GLIAC Second Team.  She played in 15 regular-season contests, scoring in double figures in nine of her final 11 games increasing her season scoring average to 11.5 points per game.  Sherwood averaged nearly five rebounds per contest and was solid at the free throw line making 42-of-48 (87.5 percent), including 11-of-11 at the charity stripe in a win at Saginaw Valley State.  She tied Cherney for the team lead in scoring average, while ranking third on the squad in both steals and blocked shots, and second in assists.

To earn conference All Academic recognition, student-athletics must be an active member of their respective teams at the end of the season and cannot be a freshman or first-year transfer student. All-Academic Teams are comprised of those student-athletes that meet criteria and carry a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0-3.49. Academic Excellence Teams are comprised of student athletes that have a cumulative GPA of 3.50-4.0. Grades are based on marks from the previous semester.
