Dearborn school officials vow to appreciate teachers amidst statewide shortage

A report published last month by two of Michigan's largest teacher unions further illustrates the dire state of the profession in the state. According to a survey conducted by Lansing-based research and development firm, Public Policy Associates, fewer people are going into the teaching field, leading to shortages in districts across Michigan. Dearborn Schools Superintendent Glenn Maleyko said initiatives Dearborn Schools are making to recruit new teachers include the working with Wayne State University for its Metro Detroit Teaching Residency for Urban Excellence Project. The program targets recent graduates and mid-career professionals with STEM experience who are interested in teaching. TRUE prepares the 36 educators-in-training as K-12 teachers over an 18-month period, during which they complete their master's degree and receive teaching certification. The project will also offer year-long residencies in Dearborn Public Schools and the Detroit Public Schools Community District.
