The GO-GIRL (Gaining Options - Girls Investigate Real Life) program - an initiative of the Wayne State University College of Education - recently hosted its final celebration. Members of the GO-GIRL community convened on campus to reconnect, engage and commemorate the program's success and positive impact on the lives of girls throughout metropolitan Detroit.

Begun in 2002, the purpose of the initiative was to increase seventh grade girls' competence and confidence in mathematics, technology, scientific thinking and communication by engaging them in experiences that promoted an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and build their capacity to pursue related careers. The program grew from a one-time intervention to an inclusive community that supported girls throughout high school and beyond. Girls explored STEM careers with Wayne State faculty and undergraduate mentors, gained experience using use library and online research tools, learned HTML, worked in teams to create mobile apps, explored Wayne State's campus, participated in residential summer academies, attended GO-GIRL gatherings and more.

"It is difficult for me to believe that this year marks the end of the GO-GIRL program. Thanks to your support and dedication over the past 17 years, GO-GIRL was able to serve more than 1,200 adolescent girls and their families in the Detroit area," said Sally K. Roberts, assistant professor clinical and GO-GIRL program director. "Over the course of the program, GO-GIRL evolved from a program for adolescent girls into a community of learners - a community that includes scientists, faculty, university staff, undergraduate mentors, girls and their families. Although the program is ending, we know that participants in the GO-GIRL community will continue to make a difference and support girls in STEM related activities."
