J.C. Heard Jazzweek@wayne showcases young talent

The Wayne State University Department of Music will celebrate budding musicians from the Detroit area during J.C. Heard JazzWeek@Wayne. The community is invited to free performances July 22 and 24 showcasing the young artists. Each summer, WSU hosts up to 40 area high school students for a weeklong, intensive and tuition-free jazz education. The WSU Department of Music embarked on a long-term partnership with the Detroit Jazz Festival in 2007, resulting in the creation of JazzWeek. The program combines the artistic and educational forces of the Department of Music, the Detroit Jazz Festival and the J.C. Heard legacy. In 2012, the initiative was renamed J.C. Heard JazzWeek@Wayne. Guided by WSU's jazz faculty, guest artists from the Detroit community and national artists sponsored by the Detroit Jazz Festival, participants study improvisation, theory and ensemble playing. Russ Miller, associate professor of jazz studies and J.C Heard JazzWeek@Wayne program director, invites the community to celebrate the budding jazz musicians as they perform at Detroit venues this month. All events are free and open to the public.
