Lauren Mangus, president of the Michigan Association of School Psychologists and an assistant professor of educational psychology at Wayne State University, discusses the nationwide shortage of student counselors and school psychologists. Michigan’s shortage is among the worst in the nation. “There’s such a need…There are a lot of people leaving education, and there’s a shortage of all school staff nationwide. The pandemic has definitely heightened that and made things very complicated.” Mangus says that a lot of focus has been given to recruitment and retention of the next generation of professionals. “One of the things we’re working toward is increasing exposure of people to the role and function of a school psychologists…”
