Here’s how Michigan should spend billions in school funding | Opinion

Michael F. Addonizio, Charles H. Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellow and professor emeritus of educational leadership and policy studies at Wayne State University, co-wrote an op-ed discussing spending options in Michigan’s public school funding. “As we reach the end of a tumultuous school year, Michigan’s k-12 public schools and state policymakers face two major fiscal challenges. First, they need to identify the most effective uses of about $6 billion in federal COVID-19 relief money. Second, they must ensure that Michigan’s public schools are equitably and adequately funded for the long haul, after this one-time relief money is gone. The first challenge — really a terrific opportunity — falls largely to local school districts. They must plan how they will use this unprecedented federal investment in schools. The funds are authorized through three programs: last spring’s CARES Act, December 2020’s Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA), and the American Rescue Plan (ARP), by far the largest of the three, signed into law in March this year.”
