Families struggling with remote learning, DPSCD dealing with chronic absences

Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) pushed back its return to in-person learning date as it continues to struggle with low student attendance in online classes. A return to in-person instruction will be available at the end of the month. Chronic absences are in issue in the city of Detroit, according to research from Wayne State University. Sarah Lenhoff, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies and director of the Detroit education research partnership, says the city ranked number one in the country for absences before the pandemic, with 70% of students missing at least 10% of enrolled school days. “And a full quarter of students in the district last year missed half of their enrolled school days,” Lenhoff said.
