What's New?

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted every aspect of our lives in these past few months. The college has used this time to grow and improve.

We have strengthened our faculty. Join me in welcoming five individuals who are new members of our team: Andria Eisman, Ph.D., assistant professor of community health; Alisa Hutchinson, Ph.D, assistant professor of learning design and technology; Linda Jiménez, Ph.D, senior lecturer of learning design and technology; Do-Hong Kim, Ph.D., professor of educational evaluation and research; and Amanda Miller, Ph.D., assistant professor of inclusive education.

We have also diversified our academic programs and courses. The need to temporarily move the majority of our programs online allowed us to rethink some offerings. We are offering new minors in urban education and equity studies and in yoga and mindfulness. Additionally, we are excited by overwhelming student interest in American Sign Language 1, a new fully online course.

We celebrate our first three Holmes Scholars: Manasseh Cudjoe, Rachel Torres and Anthony Webster. Managed by the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), the Holmes Scholars program supports students from historically underrepresented communities who are enrolled in doctoral programs in education. We also welcomed 14 students in our Metro Detroit Teaching Residency for Urban Excellence Project and 16 others in our Warrior Teacher Pathways program.

Finally, you may have noticed some of our marketing and communications efforts. Our newsletter has a new name. We held a contest, and our faculty and staff recommended names that better reflected our college as a whole. Congratulations to Candice Turner, a lecturer in sports administration, for submitting the winning entry. Kaleidoscope reflects the individual distinctiveness and collective strength of the many programs we offer. I am also thrilled to announce that we recently launched our new website. I invite you to explore our new online home at education.wayne.edu.

I hope you enjoy getting to know more about our new faculty, new programs and courses, and new scholars in this issue.

Be well and stay safe,

Anita G. Welch, Ph.D.
